My new fishing kayak is a 2022 Hobie Outback! Let's discuss two things in this video. First, why I chose to upgrade to a 2022 Hobie Outback from my 2019 Hobie Compass. And second, the modifications I've made to the stock 2021 Hobie Outback in order to make it an efficient kayak fishing machine! Normally, after spending 2.5 years in a fishing kayak, it's not easy to switch to another kayak and feel at home! Will that be the case this time? Let's find out. Let's go see what we can catch!

The Backstory

Honestly, it was timem to upgrade. As I reveal in the video, the kick up fins were the motivation for an upgrade, and the other changes I discuss are the reason why I went with the Hobie Outback instead of another Hobie Compass. The Hobie Compass is a fine boat and if this were my first Hobie I would undoubtedly choose the Hobie Compass again.

I went to the marsh today just to film this video about the kayak and sortof kick the tires a bit. I'm very happy with the performance of this boat! I didn't think that the turbo fins would be that big of a deal, in fact, I thought they'd be a deteriment since they are longer. However, to my surprise, I found that they are appropriately named and the length didn't cause any issues.

The speed difference is interesting but it sure feels as if this boat moves faster. In fact, the hull is a lot louder when I really push it than the Hobie Compass ever was. Of course, that could just be due to the hull design difference, but the turbo fins are surely a factor as well.

As for the length of the turbo fins... I believe the kick up feature helps with that. What I noticed is that as I hit the bottom of the marsh in certain places, although I felt it, the fin did something to adjust and move through the obstruction. I have to attribute that to the kick up fin functionality. Either way, the kayak excelled in it's inaugural outing.
